Your First Session: What to Expect

Most people who book a Morning Shadows session have never done anything like it before. That is exactly who we design for. Nothing here is a surprise on the day — you approve the plan before a camera comes out, and you control every image afterwards.
The shape of it, start to finish
Six steps. The only one with a camera in it is the fourth.
- You inquire. A short form, or a session you have built yourself. We reply personally within 24 hours — not an automated sequence.
- We talk it through. A relaxed consultation about your comfort, your boundaries, and the looks and mood you are drawn to. Ask everything here; nothing is a silly question.
- We plan the day. Wardrobe, sets, hair and makeup, running order. You approve the plan before we shoot, so you arrive knowing exactly what is happening.
- The session. A private, closed set at your own pace. You are guided through every pose and expression — your only job is to show up as you are.
- Your private reveal. You see the work and choose what to keep. No audience, no pressure to decide on the spot.
- Your artwork arrives. Files, and any prints, albums or framed pieces you chose, hand-finished and delivered.
What to wear, and what to bring
Whatever makes you feel most yourself — from elegant and covered to bold and artful. We plan the looks together at your consultation, and styling guidance is part of the experience, so you are not deciding this alone.
Bring more than you think
Options are good. We would rather leave three looks unused than wish we had a fourth.
Things that fit properly
Anything that pinches or gapes will show in a still frame. Comfortable and well-fitted beats expensive.
Pieces that mean something
A jacket that is yours, jewelry with a history, the boots you actually wear. These make the strongest frames.
Skin, the day before
Avoid new treatments, fake tan and anything that might react. Tight elastic leaves marks — loose clothes on the way in.
Who is in the room
A small, calm, professional team — typically your artist plus hair and makeup. The studio is private and closed, and the crew are hand-picked industry professionals. You set the boundaries and we hold them, for the whole session, without you having to ask twice.
You do not need any experience in front of a camera. Most of our clients have none.
How long yours takes
Nothing is rushed — the pace is yours — but the shape of the day depends on what you book.
- Portrait — about an hour. One look, cleanly done.
- Private Boudoir — around three hours. The signature session, and the one most people choose.
- Fine Art — half a day, with styled sets built for the concept.
- Icon — a full day with a full production team.
Current prices and what is included are on the bookings page, and you can adjust any of them there before you send. Payment plans are available, and nothing is due when you inquire.
The reveal, and your artwork
You choose your pieces at a private reveal after the session — from a single signed print to a full collection or a fine-art book. There is no minimum, and no pressure to decide on the day.
Your files
High-resolution, print-ready JPGs in color and black-and-white. Original camera files are not sold.
Edits
Your first review round is included. Anything beyond the agreed scope is $100 an hour.
On the wall
Prints, albums and framed pieces are finished by hand rather than sent to a lab.
Your privacy, in plain terms
You control your images, completely, and that is written down before we shoot rather than promised on the day.
- Every client signs a model release. Portfolio use is opt-in — nothing is published unless you have agreed to that use in writing, and saying no changes nothing else about your session.
- You grant each use separately: portfolio, social, press and exhibition, print sales. Say yes to one and no to the rest if that is what suits you.
- We ask after the session, at your reveal, once you have seen the work — not on the day you book, before you know what we made together. Say yes and your artwork credit rises from $200 to $300.
- Public galleries are always artful and implied.
- Nothing is shared without your written say-so.
- Large-format originals stay with the studio so an edition holds its value; you receive a full set of images for your own use.
Questions people ask before booking
I don't think I photograph well.
Almost everyone says this. Being photographed well is a skill of the photographer, not the subject — direction, light and pace do the work. You are guided through every frame.
Who else is in the room?
Your photographer and hair and makeup — a small, hand-picked professional crew, and no one else. The set is closed, so only the team you have approved is in the room, and there is never an audience.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, and we encourage it. Bring a friend or your partner if it helps you settle — they are welcome on set for the whole day. You can also bring your own hair, makeup and styling team instead of ours, and if it puts you at ease, you or the person you bring can film on set.
How undressed do I have to be?
Exactly as much as you want, and not one degree more. The range runs from fully clothed portraiture to implied nude. You set it at the consultation and you can change it on the day.
What if I freeze up?
We slow down. Nothing about the day depends on you performing on cue, and the first twenty minutes are usually the hardest for everyone.
Will anyone I know see these?
Only if you decide so. Portfolio use is opt-in, each use is granted separately, and we ask after the session rather than on the day you book. Unclothed work is never public. Nothing is shared without your written permission. Nothing appears on social media unless you have given permission for that specific use.
Can I have an NDA?
Yes. We sign a non-disclosure agreement on request, and we can do that before the consultation if you would rather talk under one.
Do you travel?
Yes — the studio tours. See where we'll be, or request your city.
Can I book this as a gift?
Yes. Mention it in your inquiry and we will arrange it so the surprise survives the paperwork.
Can we talk before I book?
Yes, and most people do. A phone call, a video call, or a coffee if you are in Los Angeles — whichever suits you. It costs nothing, there is no deposit to have it, and there is no obligation afterwards.
When you're ready
There is no deposit to ask a question, and we reply personally within 24 hours.
